The enemy has been inside the gates for some time, but now that enemy is in power. They dominate one of two major American political parties and have installed a man who once openly supported Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah, et al., as the chief executive of America’s cultural capital. Even now, that man continues to apologize for Islamism à la Sadiq Khan.
There are those who will deny that is the case. Possibly because their ideology demands that they continue to see themselves in an oppressed, dramatically asymmetrical position. Put another way, they have adopted more than just a set of beliefs. Ego itself demands that they view their “oppression” as an absolute reality lest they be forced to call their identity, papery thin as it is, into question.
It might also be true that the enemy understands that maintaining this façade is critical to the total success of their revolution, the stated goal of which is “the total eradication of Western civilization.” Those words are attributable to QUAD, an organization led by Mahmoud Khalil, a close ally of the current mayor of New York City. So, what was once a fifth column (a clandestine movement working from within a society to subvert it) has become a pillar of a new society that seeks to unmake America—first by drowning her spirit in doubt, self-hatred, and division.
That former fifth column replicates itself in the way such movements always do—by spreading hatred for a conveniently selected other. The “evil” of that other is then used to justify a myriad of actual evils—up to and including acts of terrorism and mass murder. It was the Democratic Party that officially welcomed the Democratic Socialist-Islamist coalition or “red-green alliance” into the American political mainstream during the 2024 presidential election while knowing full well that said alliance is pro-terrorism, anti-Semitic, and anti-Western.
That alliance was allowed to turn the 2024 Democratic National Convention into one massive demonstration against Israel’s war on Hamas—itself a justified response to October 7. “Ceasefire Now” pins and keffiyehs dominated the front row as Kamala Harris accepted her party’s nomination. Harris even went so far as to promise to force a ceasefire (a move that would have guaranteed Hamas’s survival) should she win the election. Sincere or not, she was pandering to the anti-Jewish wing of her party. The Democrats’ conscious decision to bring the red-green alliance out of the political cold repeats another familiar pattern: that of a seemingly benign political entity joining forces with radicals in order to shore-up their power. Hindenburg did so when he named Hitler chancellor of Germany. In that position, Hitler laid the groundwork for the total takeover of Germany by his Nazi Party.
Said groundwork was laid not just with fiery speeches, but with stochastic terrorism. Brown Shirts became an everyday fixture of German urbania and, in no time at all, they went from being above the law (in the course of openly terrorizing Jewish businesses in the name of their anti-Jewish boycott and without legal repercussions) to becoming the law.Recognize the pattern. What begins as a reset of national politics involving a power-sharing deal with radicals leads to stochastic terrorism that gives way to an entirely new sociopolitical order.
Those who recognize that pattern take so-called “homegrown terrorism” more seriously than those who simply view that terrorism as a bug of some new global reality. Here in Seattle, many shrugged their shoulders when it was announced that the city would not prosecute to the full extent of the law 33 individuals who committed close to $1 million in property damage belonging to the University of Washington to “protest” what they call the university’s “complicity in the genocide in Gaza.” Those of us who did not shrug are able to recognize that the Antifa members (self-identified) who face either a charge of criminal trespass or no chargers at all have in connection with the Super UW occupation of UW have enjoyed the protection of the Seattle and Washington State political establishment since at least 2020 when their comrades were allowed to occupy Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, barring law enforcement and emergency services from it for weeks on end.
The city continued to foster that occupation even while men armed with automatic weapons, some belonging to the John Brown Gun Club and others belonging to a criminal street gang, guarded the perimeter of the “Capitol Hill Organized Protest” (CHOP). Those men would eventually shoot and kill a child, mistaking him for a rival gang member. They were caught on video searching for a shell casing in an effort to cover up their crime. The killers were never brought to justice, but a jury did force the City of Seattle to pay the victim’s family $30 million for ceding control of Capitol Hill to their child’s killer. Which brings me to my most important point: in this context, stochastic terrorism serves the purposes of those who wish to dramatically redistribute power and thereby radically reimagine entire socio-political systems by first setting fire to the contract that exists between society and a system of governance that can only lose the confidence of a people when it ceases to provide them with basic security, not to mention an economy that works.
Recognize the pattern. What begins as a reset of national politics involving a power-sharing deal with radicals leads to stochastic terrorism that gives way to an entirely new sociopolitical order.
But what are we to make of those who seek to accomplish that redistribution and reimagining from inside the halls of government and who incite the intellectually weak and desperate to acts of political violence while doing what they can to ensure that “protesters” and “activists” will not be prevented from acting in increasingly brazen manners by the police and courts? Too many of us make nothing of them at all because seeing them for what they are requires us to overcome a certain level of denialism and the fear that keeps that denial in place.
But, were we to make something of them, we would understand that they are not American in any way that matters and should be looked upon in the way General Washington and his men looked upon King George and the army that served British corporate interests perhaps more than it did the British Crown or even in the way Dietrich Bonhoeffer looked upon Hitler and the Reich following his realization that had he and others like him not hidden behind German civility and Christian pacifism during the Nazis’ rise to power, then something could have been done sooner. Before the Brown Shirts overwrote the collective consciousness of Germany, causing her to forget her true intellectual and spiritual heritage, a heritage that included more than one defeat of Rome in battle and the full embrace of the Renaissance and Enlightenment. And the clock that ran out for Bonhoffer (not to act period, but to act soon enough) is running out for American patriots now. No one should be calling for another Operation Valkyrie just yet, but resistance is overdue.
