The great mistake of the modern observer is believing we are witnessing a series of disconnected cultural fires. We look at campus encampments, the partisan bickering of the duopoly, or the rise of fringe groups like the DSA or the “groypers,” and we see a dozen different wars.
In reality, these are symptoms of a single, terminal pathology: the elevation of resentment over civic fidelity. For years, radicals have dictated the frame, forcing us into policy debates that mask a deeper indictment against the existence of the United States. To defeat these movements, we must move the fight to their greatest vulnerability. It’s their anti-Americanism, stupid.
The Inevitable Conclusion of Resentment
This radicalization is the fruit of a “long march through the institutions.” By installing a simplistic oppressor vs. oppressed binary as the default lens in our schools and media, we have traded critical thinking for tribal resentment.
When you label Western liberal democracy as the primary engine of global oppression, “Death to America” is not a fringe deviation; it is the inevitable logical conclusion. You cannot spend years teaching a generation that their foundations are irredeemably tainted and then act shocked when they chant for the collapse of the structure.
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice
Demagogic leaders weaponized this rot for quick influence, but history shows they cannot steer the fire once it’s lit. Robespierre was devoured by his own Terror, and modern leaders who try to “deal” with the establishment are often purged by the very base they radicalized.
Successful moderation is an historical freak occurrence—like George Wallace’s post-assassination-attempt repentance. We cannot wait for a “life-changing event” to moderate today’s radicals. In a world of algorithmic outrage, these leaders cannot lead; they can only run fast enough to stay ahead of the mob, or be devoured by it.
Tactical Acceleration: Forcing the Choice
We should not fear this escalation; we should accelerate it. We must force these movements to reach their logical conclusion as quickly as possible. When the illiberal fringes are forced to loudly declare “death to America,” the “strategic ambiguity” used by mainstream politicians vanishes.
This is not an attempt to incite the fringe, but to strip their camouflage. Transparency is a pro-social value; strategic ambiguity is a pro-radical value. By forcing every activist, pundit, and politician to get off the fence and choose a side, we gain the clarity needed to know who seeks to improve our nation and who seeks to burn it down.
These are symptoms of a single, terminal pathology: the elevation of resentment over civic fidelity.
Two Faces of Anti-Americanism
We must be clear-eyed about the anti-Americanism on both fringes, even as they manifest differently.
On the far left, the anti-Americanism is often explicit: they burn the flag and chant for our destruction. We should appreciate their honesty and respond with the social ostracism they earn.
On the far right, anti-Americanism is often deceptively positioned as a defense of America. We must distinguish between three distinct threats:
- The Taboo Violators: The Nazis and white supremacists who march for a racial nation. They claim patriotism while violating the fundamental constitutional values of liberty and equality for all.
- The Norm-Breakers: Those willing to flout laws or constitutional due process in a “zero-sum,” adversarial game to defeat the other side.
- The Sanitizers: The politicians and pundits who don’t cross the taboo line themselves but coddle these groups to appeal to their energy and votes.
We must be firm: the process is the country. If you destroy the Constitution to “save” the nation, you have saved a geography but killed the America. There is no “necessary evil” that involves destroying the foundation you claim to protect.
The Framework of Accountability
To restore our society, we need a framework to determine who should face direct social ostracism and who should have their moral credibility harmed. This isn’t about the subjective label of “un-American”; it is about anti-American hostility.
- Tier 1: The Civic Taboo. Some lines are uncrossable. Cheering for dead American soldiers, advocating for a racial ethno-state, or explicit “death to America” rhetoric are violations of the civic peace. Those who cross this line—and those who explicitly sanitize or defend them—should face professional and social ostracism. This is the enforcement of a universal moral floor.
- Tier 2: Illiberal Means. This applies to the “norm-breakers.” When a leader argues for policy ends by flouting the law or the Constitution, they forfeit their standing as a credible defender of the American project.
- Tier 3: The Enablers. We judge leaders by who they allow in their tent. A politician who associates with Tier 1 or Tier 2 radicals must make it undeniably clear that they do not subscribe to those views. There must be no confusion amongst their audience that they find such views acceptable. If they fail to draw that line, their moral credibility must be systematically discredited.
The Voter’s Dilemma
I recognize the dilemma we face. Our current system is so corrupted that almost nobody is fully immune to these pressures. In most races, politicians play a “smart” game, attempting to appeal to the middle without losing the hardcore partisans.
I don’t want to tell you which fringe is definitely “worse.” Both are existential threats. What I ask is that you assess candidates based on this question: Who is more likely to hold firm and resist the anti-American extremists on their own fringe? There is no reliable heuristic that one political party is better than the other in this regard; it is a candidate-by-candidate assessment. Your vote should go to the leader with the courage to maintain what you believe should be the moral boundaries of their own “big tent.”
Drawing the Line
We are drifting toward the extremes because moderates have failed to draw an explicit line. We can no longer let them straddle it. We must pressure them with a simple message: “You must align with the true defenders of America and our Constitution, or you will align with those who seek its destruction.”
The faster the fringes make their anti-Americanism explicit, the faster candidates will be forced to choose. This is not a partisan purity test, but the restoration of a universal civic floor. If your side cannot survive without the support of those who cheer for our nation’s downfall or the subversion of its laws, then your side has already lost.
You can hate our policies, but you cannot hate our existence and expect a seat at the table. By exposing anti-Americanism as the Achilles’ heel of these movements, we force a choice: Are you for America or against it?
It’s their anti-Americanism, stupid.
